On the basis of the IOM recommendations, the WIC food packages were revised in 2007 to align them with the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and current infant feeding practice guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Recent WIC changes launched a natural experiment that has the potential to affect dietary outcomes among millions of economically disadvantaged families. The program’s broad reach to a vulnerable population of low-income women, infants, and young children offers important opportunities for early intervention to establish healthy eating habits and prevent obesity. 1 WIC services to participants include the provision of supplemental nutrient-dense foods in the WIC food packages, healthcare referrals, and nutrition education.
